Surface Tension

We breach the water, slice
through chlorine blue.
I’m on display—drowning

the urge to fling the lifeguard
away & swim. He slings his arm
across my chest & grabs

my breast. Everyone knows

the rules. No panic. No struggle.
I search women pants life
vest
, find YouTube videos

of men saving only themselves.
They tread water. Peel off
their pants, knot the legs, beat

open waistbands against water
like loons lifting skyward.
Skirts lead different lives.

Everyone knows
women walk into water.
Men walk on top.
